Why is my USB v.2, 7 port hub stupid?.?.?

Today, I was eager to getting working on my homework, pulled out my junk drive for the first time this year, and prepared to upload my college knowledge into its depths... Did that happen? No... What did happen you ask. I unplugged my computer hardware in fear of the storm that was ensuing today, you know, to be safe. I plugged it all in today, and then... Well... The errors. Not only did I lose everything on my junk drive dating back to my freshman year, but I also lost my USB v.2 7 port hub. When I plug the damn thing into my computer now it just says that there was a power overload and that it doesn't recognize the device being used; same goes for the junk drive. When I first got that overload message my junk drive was slotted into the hub, so I think that it got a burst of power that must have shot its memory. Thank God my 120GB external hard drive and printer still works. On the lighter side, it wasn't as bad as I had thought. While I was updating the senior information to the junk drive I was doing the same on the external, I deleted out the old school files to upload the new ones when this all happened. All of the information was still in the recycle bin, so I recovered it and I didn't lose any of my college stuff after all... Still pisses me off, that tonight I lost about $100 worth of hardware for my computer.
